Neither loved nor feared

Management in times of change

Everyone is talking about it and nobody has a problem with it: the company management. When one looks deeper, the picture is very often different! Problems in the company and bad results are much more often a consequence of management deficits than one realizes or admits to him/herself. Many managers are very well aware of this.

It doesn’t spring from nothing that the literature on management is so abundant and that »management gurus« successfully sell their »own« – naturally the only correct – style of leadership.
The dynamic changing of the business environment and its increasing complexity also contributes to the deep insecurity of many managers. The reactions vary from the negation of the problems (»The employees must simply do what I say«) up to an over exaggerated view.

Decisive in competition
Of course, no »management recipe« is applicable to every person, situation or company. However principles of successful management that have been successful in the long term can be recognized. Especially in times of rapid change and widespread insecurity in the business environment, continuity and clarity in management is gaining more meaning. It’s not about being loved or feared as a manager, but winning and keeping the trust and respect of your employees. To be aware of and be able to apply the principles of successful management is a decisive competitive advantage and is largely independent of talent. The good news is, management can be learned! For this regular training, also for experienced managers, to maintain and improve their own abilities is as important as a fundamental training for management beginners.

Leadership with passion
EtThings are somewhat different when we speak of »leadership«. Here the qualities of vision, passion and emotion come into the picture, also in general more talents are required with which one is born with and which cannot be learned. And still praxis forces the conclusion that even born leaders often experience dramatic failures if they rely solely on their »leadership« and neglect the principles or tools of management, or have tendencies towards aloofness and egomania. On the other side entrepreneurial courage and visionary passion can be developed on the basis of a thorough absorption of the principles of successful leadership, if the love of the work and the commitment to the success of the company are strong enough. Up to a certain point one can also train the leadership qualities in one’s own personality.

It is important to be aware that this is not essential for the long-term success of a company. Decisive are the knowledge and application of management tools and leadership principles in company practice.

(»One must be a born leader«) The leadership style must lie between the soft and exaggeratedly motivating and authoritative and personally distant. Gerald Karner, Personal strategist & management consultant
