Change of workplace

Targeted job change instead of »job hopping«

In the past, it was normal to spend all your life in one company. Nowadays personalists see this as a sign of laziness and a lack of flexibility. In today’s world of work the regular change of jobs is a rule rather than an exception - this can mean a change within the company or a change to another company or industry.

The reasons are multifaceted: Employees cannot fulfil themselves in their job and get bored, changes in the company structure lead to personnel cutbacks; the company culture does not suit the person, problems with members of staff, the boss or colleagues etc.

How do you make your job change a success?

  • Important is that the job change is well thought out and can be well justified. If you change your job, too many times you can be labelled as a job hopper without staying power and conflict handling skills - your job chances decline dramatically. Be systematic with your job change and it can be very beneficial for your career. For young employees a change after two or maximum three years is advisable. The older you are, the longer you should stay in the same company. Generally, if you are thinking of a job change you should already be able to show success in your company.
  • Do not rush anything; think seriously about your decision. Find pros and cons for a job change and think about what your expectations are and what you exactly want. If required get professional support from a careers advisor.
  • If you have made the decision, do not hesitate any longer and take action! Collect detailed information on all possible future employers. Send targeted applications and pay attention that you fit the profile of the job offered.
  • If you have found a new challenge, then speak to your boss first and not to your colleagues. Consider that you cannot control the gossip and its impact on your remaining work time.
  • Try to make your leave as positive as possible - you never know you might by chance work with your previous colleagues in the future.

If you consider all these points, then nothing that can stand in your way of a successful job change and a step up the career ladder.
